July 3: Thisk

Day 54

It's almost the 4th of July!!!!!!! I love almost everything about this holiday. When I was little, July 4th was an all day extravaganza. My mother's entire extended family would get together and there would be homemade ice cream, barbequed pork steaks, washtubs filled with any kind of soda you can think of, and of course, fireworks. I've always been partial to smoke bombs and Chinese lanterns, but in recent years I've developed a fondness for Roman candles. As with alcohol, my home-state of Missouri has some of the most lax fireworks laws around. Never in my whole MO life did I ever hear of a fireworks ban. In Western Kansas fireworks are not only banned in most communities and counties, but fireworks stands are almost as elusive as wild cats that you really want to catch and tame, but can't. But I digress.

Today, I'm purging another kitchen utensil. I'm not quite sure what to call it. It's sort of a combination whisk/tongs. I'll call it a thisk. I bought it thinking it could be used as a flat whisk and double as salad tongs. I was wrong on two counts. It does not work as a flat whisk and does not do a great job as salad tongs.

As an added affront, the thisk is awkward to store and takes up too much space in my utensil pot.
