Day 297
Today I'm purging this book,
which was an awesome read! It's the true story of the North Platte (NE) Canteen. During WWII the citizens of North Platte and the surrounding area offered a free canteen to every troop train that came through their town between 1941 and 1946. There were thousands of trains that came at all hours of the day and night and this rural NE town met every one. It's a truly amazing story and for a lot of the veterans interviewed, their 10 minute stop in North Platte was the highlight of their war service. Reading this book made me wish that my grandfathers were still around. I wonder if their trains stopped in North Platte?
North Platte is only about four hours from where we live, so for Valentine's Day, I gave Clint a certificate for one weekend trip to North Platte. I think we're planning to go sometime in March. Sandhill cranes migrate through North Platte in March and Buffalo Bill had a big home there, so it should be a fun trip!
I'm going to offer the book to my father-in-law. He's a prolific reader and I think he'd enjoy it.
